The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has decided to extend the deadline for feedback and comments on the ‘Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022′ until January 2, 2023.

In response to several stakeholders’ requests, the ministry has decided to extend the time limit for receipts, a statement stated.

On November 18, the Ministry published the Bill, along with an Explanatory Note, on its website and solicited public feedback, ANI reported from Mumbai.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill is a legislation that defines the rights and duties of the citizen (digital nagrik) on the one hand, and the data fiduciary’s obligations to use collected data lawfully on the other. The bill is based on the following data economy principles.

The Union or the federal government withdrew the Data Protection Bill during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 3 earlier this year, intending to bring a comprehensive legislature.

Telecom and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the joint parliamentary committee that reviewed the original draft proposed 88 amendments to a bill with 91 sections, leading the government to decide that there was “no option” but to withdraw the original Bill completely.

In November, the government released a new draft of the Digital Data Protection Bill for public comment.

There are currently over 76 crore (760 million) active internet users (digital nagriks or citizens) and this figure is expected to rise to 120 crore (1.2 billion) in the coming years.
