Arnab Goswami has changed its channel name ‘Republic’ to ‘Republic TV’. Arnab had filled a fresh application with the Union Ministry for Information & Broadcasting for changing the name of his channel.
According to the fresh application, which has been reviewed by News18. Goswami as the managing director and Editor-in-Chief of ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd will run the new channel as his capacity. Goswami has requested that all references to ‘Republic’ in their previous applications be now read as ‘Republic TV’.
The necessity of changing the name of the channel was felt as the BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had written a letter to the MIB against granting licence to Goswami’s upcoming news channel ‘Republic’. According to Swamy, the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950 bars anyone from using the term ‘Republic’ for professional and commercial purposes.
