According to a research by independent web analytics company StatCounter, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3 percent of internet usage worldwide in October compared to 48.7 percent by desktop. Given the recent growth in mobile devices, the internet consumption pattern has also changed by leaps and bounds. As the reach of mobile devices has increased, a lot of emphasis is now laid on making the content more mobile friendly. The youth of the world is often the most ready to adapt to and learn to use new technologies.

With 220 million users, India has become the second-largest market in the world for smartphones, according to a separate data by eMarketer and thus is of huge interest to businesses and marketers who aim to explore trade options with the nation of over 1.3 billion in population.
According to the research about usage of social media from last year to coming years, the usage is not decrease as expected users are increasing on yearly basis. Data is given below :-
In 2015, the users are 181.7 million
In 2016, the users are 216.5 million
In 2017, the users will be 250.8 million
And in 2018, the users will be 282.9 million
Overall, however, 72% of India’s social media users log in via mobile devices, and we predict that this proportion will increase in the coming months as mobile internet access accelerates further.
Facebook statistics offer an inside view about the behaviour of the youth in the Internet on a worldwide basis. Almost half of the 18-34 year old check Facebook as soon as they wake up or before they get out of bed (28%). The average number of friends per Facebook user is 130 & an average number of pages, groups, and events a user is connected to is 80. 205 photos are uploaded per day. The age scenario is not same different age group people are using social media.
Young adults – Young adults of ages 18 to 29 are the most likely to use social media – fully 90% do. Still, usage among those 65 and older has more than tripled since 2010 when 11% used social media.
Women and men use social media at similar rates –Women were more likely than men to use social networking sites for a number of years, although since 2014 these differences have been modest. Now, 68% of all women use social media, compared with 62% of all men.
Those with higher education levels and household income lead the way – Over the past decade, it has consistently been the case that those in higher-income households were more likely to use social media. More than 56% of those living in the lowest-income households now use social media, though growth has leveled off in the past few years. 2013 was the first year that more than half of those with a high school diploma or less used social media.
More than half of rural residents now use social media – Those who live in rural areas are less likely than those in suburban and urban communities to use social media, a pattern consistent over the past decade. Now, 58% of rural residents, 68% of suburban residents, and 64% of urban residents use social media.
According to the research social media growth in India:
1. In India 10% of total population are active on social media. In this, total no. of active social media users are 134 million, total number of active social users accessing via mobile are 97 million and active mobile social users as a percentage of the total population is 8%.
2. Facebook and Whatsapp continue to dominate the other social app also.
The users of Facebook is more than 53%, Whatsapp users are 44 in percentage, Google+ are 40%, Twitter users 34%, Linkedin users are 29%, Instagram users are only 19%, where as Wechat users are 18%. Facebook most popular between the age group of 20-29.
Men dominate the Facebook horizon.
While Facebook remains the most popular social network in the 20-29 age bracket, teens are really not that keen on the network. Participation of women in the social media space should be a concern for corporates and the governments. In fact we have seen initiatives from companies like Google and the present government that are encouraging more women to join the Internet.
3. Smartphones dominate the facebook usage. During the Q2 2015 the revenue call Facebook revealed the mobile ad revenue was 76 percent of the total ad revenue, which was up from 62% a year ago. Daily mobile users were 844 million, a 29% increase and mobile only monthly users were 655 million. So the total active users were under 1.5 billion.
Through examining several advantages and disadvantages we will highlight the circumstances for responsible handling of social media. The examination takes place on two levels:
1. The global form of information and expressing opinions via social media and its impact on social systems.
2. The individual form of participating and the specific influence of social media on the own social behaviour. Subsequently the effects of social media on the two levels above will be integrated into an overall picture. As main results of this study we can state that • social media does have an impact on human brain and in consequence on the quality of our life, • emotions play a crucial role in human communication, • beside the generally known benefits there are serious threats for individuals and society and thus a need for a sensible social media interaction.
Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates bad habits. Student prefer to chat with friends for hours, and this lead to a waste of time that could have been used for studying , playing or learning new skills. It is often said that a long tern friendship or relationship is developed when people meet each other. People spend time with others and share their experience and problems.
But this virtual way of communicating through social media with friends and relatives does not lead to a natural friendly experience. It can’t maintain the healthy relationship with them.
